WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS

A Doctoral Symposium (DS) will be organized for postgraduate students on the tutorial’s day, November 26th. The DS provides a unique opportunity for PhD students to present their ongoing work and to interact with other students and experienced researchers. It doesn't matter if the work has been previously presented at another conference, is intended to be presented elsewhere, or is still in progress. The DS is open to PhD students at any stage of their doctoral studies, Master students are also welcome to present. DS posters can be in either A0 or A1 format, with vertical (portrait) orientation, and written in English. The student must be present at the poster to interact with attendees during the DS session. The DS Advisory Board will be integrated by distinguished researchers who will evaluate the presentations, give their recommendations, and choose the best presentation. The best poster presentation will receive recognition from the CIARP Organizing Committee. All posters presented will be included in a "Book of Abstracts" to promote knowledge sharing.

We are glad to announce the 1st IAPR LATAM School on Advanced Biometrics Techniques (Hybrid Event), organized by ANID FOVI230126 Project and held in conjunction with CIARP 2024, which will take place during the conference with the participation of leading international researchers. It will focus on topics such as: Synthetic Biometric Data, Vein-based Biometrics, Gait Recognition, Large-Scale Biometrics, among others. The program will be announced soon. More info at: www.brecs.net | secretariat@brecs.net.

Tutorials organized by experts in particular areas constitute a great addition to the conference. The conference program will include two hands-on tutorials (half-day) intended for participants interested on learning about:

Tutorial 1 - “Pattern Recognition Applications on Metagenomics Data" by Prof. Marco Mora and Prof. Sara Cuadros:
Metagenomics is the study of the genetic information of microbial communities and has become an important method in microbial ecology. Metagenomic DNA is obtained directly from an environment and is often fragmented before being sequenced into small reads, which can be assembled into longer sequences called contigs. Alternatively, using third generation sequencing, long reads can be generated. Regardless of the sequencing method, an important step in the metagenomic analysis pipeline is Binning, which corresponds to the classification (supervised) or clustering (unsupervised) of reads or contigs. In the case of unsupervised Binning, several Machine Learning algorithms that use DNA sequence descriptors, such as k-mers Frequency and GC Content to perform clustering, have been employed. The workshop mainly addresses 3 topics to introduce the fundamentals of Computational Metagenomics and Metagenomic Binning. Firstly, the biological foundations of Metagenomics are reviewed, secondly the computational tools currently used in the metagenomic data processing pipeline, and finally an approach to improve Metagenomic Binning using Random Weight Neural Networks.

Tutorial 2 - “Pattern Recognition for Smarter and Precision Agriculture" by Prof. Sebastian Romero, Prof. Miguel Araya, and Prof. Marcos Carrasco:
Topics to review in the tutorial are Digital Agriculture and Remote Sensing, The Importance of Agroclimatic Context in Remote Sensing, and A Practical Example in Precision Agriculture. All necessary databases and R scripts will be provided during the course.

CIARP 2024

Talca, Chile - Nov 26-29, 2024

The Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition (CIARP) is one of the most relevant scientific events focusing on all aspects of pattern recognition, computer vision, artificial intelligence, data mining, and related areas. Every year, it brings a networking forum for sharing scientific results and experiences on new knowledge and applications on related topics, as well as for increasing cooperation between research groups.
CIARP 2024 will be hosted by the Universidad Católica del Maule (Talca, Chile), supported by the Chilean Association of Pattern Recognition (ACHIRP), and endorsed by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). As in previous editions, proceedings will be published by Springer as LNCS and three conference awards will be given (including IAPR Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards).

The program will include renowned keynote speakers, special sessions on cooperation between industry and academia, as well as workshops and hands-on tutorials on cutting-edge technologies. This conference will be a 100% in-person event.

AWARDS

We are pleased to announce that two awards consisting of a cash prize and a certificate will be given to the author(s) of the best papers registered and presented at CIARP 2024. The aim of these awards is to acknowledge and encourage excellence, originality, and innovativeness of new models, methods, and techniques with an outstanding theoretical contribution and/or practical contribution to the field of pattern recognition and related areas. The selection of the winners will be based on the evaluation and recommendations from members of the Programme Committee and the evaluation of the CIARP Award Committee. The awards will be announced during the conference.

Awarded papers will be invited to submit extended version (at least 30% new contribution and no large verbatim blocks) to Special Section in Pattern Recognition Letters (deadline March 20th, 2025).

We welcome nominations for the Aurora Pons Porrata Award (APPA). This Iberoamerican annual prize is given to a living woman in recognition of an outstanding technical contribution to the field of pattern recognition and related areas. It consists of a cash amount, a suitably inscribed certificate, and a medal. Any woman from the Iberoamerican region is eligible to be nominated, except for the current members of the APP Award Committee.

To initiate the nominations, Local Committees should evaluate and select candidates to be postulated for the APPA. After that, the CVs of the final candidates will be submitted to the APP Award Coordinator. Each nomination could be endorsed by at least one endorsement letter from a member of an Iberoamerican Pattern Recognition Society different from the nominator. All proposals received from Local Committees will be evaluated by an Awarding Committee that selects the winner. This committee will be composed of three prestigious female researchers from all over the world.

Electronic CVs and endorsement letters should be submitted by 15th June 2024. The winning candidate will be announced in the CIARP 2024.
Please address your data through email to the coordinator of the APP Award Committee, Ricardo J. Barrientos (rbarrientos@ucm.cl), Subject: APP Award 2023.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will the event will be online?
No. We expect this to be a full in-peron event. We invite researchers worldwide to submit their novel articles.
Is there any facility for students to submit articles?
Students are encouraged to submit papers. If they are the first author they can be submitted as "Student Papers" and would be considered for a special prize. For details about the registration fees, please check the Registration section.
Do I have to pay extra if I have more than one paper accepted?
Please refer to the Registration section for the detailed fee conditions.
Will all accepted papers be indexed in Scopus and others?
As in previous versions of the conference, we expect that the papers will be indexed in Scopus and others. Please note that only papers that are accepted AND presented AND associated to a delegate fee, will be sent to the publisher. It is very important that the papers are in the correct format and have been proof-read by a competent English speaker, as the publisher may reject poorly written papers or those that overlap significantly with previously published work.
Does a paper discussing the application of pattern recognition in the manufacturing industry (as a black-box, and not so much about which specific methods) fit your conference?
Yes! We welcome papers describing real-world applications of pattern recognition systems.
